This course at DN Colleges Group explores the responsibilities of the Civil Engineer and their essential involvement in the construction, maintenance of the infrastructure, and key technologies and processes involved in civil engineering. You will be able to describe, analyse and evaluate modern civil engineering procedures, apply this skill and knowledge to the design of the infrastructure and produce solutions that are crucial to support modern day societies.

Upon completion of your HND Civil Engineering you will have developed a wider knowledge of the civil engineering principles which will prepare you for employment opportunities in the civil engineering industry or take further qualifications to further your knowledge and understanding of the industry
Course Structure
This course is comprised of the following core, level 5 units that all students complete. Each unit has a 15-credit value:

- Further Mathematics for Construction
- Advanced Materials
- Contracts & Management
- Highway Engineering
- Hydraulics
Occasional changes to modules and course content may take place. Students will be notified when applicable.
Assessment Methods
All Higher Technical Qualifications (HTQs) have a practical focus in delivery that compliments the theoretical underpinnings of Engineering study. Students can expect to experience a timetabled schedule of theory-led lectures/seminars alongside practical, assessment and employability workshops that prepare them for industry. All students also receive timetabled tutorial support alongside the formal curriculum.
Assessment methods are varied to ensure holistic assessment is achieved in Higher Technical Qualifications. These can include:
- Practicals
- Essay-writing
- Reports
- Project development and management
- Computer-aided design
- Podcasts/vodcasts
- Poster preparation/presentation/symposiums
- Presentations
- Time-constrained/time-limited assessment

- Peer Review

Equipment Required
Your tuition fees cover most costs associated with your course (including registration, tuition, and assessment).
There may be some extra costs that you might need to make or, choose to pay. For example:
- Books/texts – You will have access to texts from your unit reading lists in our Learning Resource Centres as well as Pearson’s dedicated HN Global platform but, you may wish to buy your own copies for personal use.
- Printing and photocopying
- Trips and enhancement opportunities.
- PPE – On occasion, field trips can require students to provide PPE although, we will advise on this as required. Costs are kept to a minimum.
Progression
This course is particularly relevant to people already working in or looking to develop a career within it. Furthermore, the course provides a range of skills relevant across a variety of different professions. People who have completed this course have gone on to work in areas of construction including:

If you wish to continue studying beyond this course, it will provide you with a strong academic basis to do so. Course progression routes will include a route to study a top-up degree in civil and structural engineering or a related discipline as well as progression to professional body membership.
