Inspiring futures: New Mental Health & Wellbeing degree launches at UCDon

Posted: 13 July 2026

University Campus Doncaster (UCDon) is proud to launch its FdSc Mental Health and Wellbeing degree, a transformative new programme designed to empower the next generation of professionals in one of the UK’s most vital and growing sectors.

With both full-time and part-time study options starting this September, the foundation degree course opens doors for aspiring and current professionals to develop the skills, compassion and confidence needed to support individuals, families and communities.

A course that makes a difference

At its heart, the programme is about impact, equipping students with the knowledge and real-world experience to positively influence mental health outcomes across society.

Through a rich curriculum covering communication, social policy, ethics and mental health practice, students will build the expertise needed to thrive in diverse care environments.

Gillian Reid, Director of the School for Health, Education, Wellbeing and Sport, said: “This programme represents our commitment to developing skilled, compassionate professionals who can truly make a difference. Mental health and wellbeing have never been more important, and we are proud to offer a course that not only builds knowledge, but inspires confidence, empathy and real-world impact.”

Flexible learning for real lives

Understanding that learners come from a variety of backgrounds, the course offers flexible study pathways:

  • Full-time: 2 years, with one day a week on campus
  • Part-time: 4 years, designed to fit alongside work and other commitments

This flexibility ensures that whether students are beginning their journey or advancing an existing career, higher education is accessible and achievable.

Learning beyond the classroom

A defining feature of the programme is its strong focus on hands-on experience. Students will complete at least 100 hours of vocational placement, gaining invaluable insight into real mental health and wellbeing settings.

Sara Brown, Programme Leader for FdSc Mental Health & Wellbeing, said: “We have designed this course to bridge the gap between theory and practice. Our students don’t just learn about mental health; they experience it in real-world settings, developing the confidence and skills needed to step straight into meaningful roles within the sector.”

Teaching methods combine lectures, workshops, case studies and guest speakers, creating a dynamic learning environment that reflects the realities of modern care practice.

Opening doors to meaningful careers

Graduates of the course will be prepared for a wide range of roles across health and social care, including work in community services, residential care, public health and specialist support services.

The programme also provides a strong academic foundation for further study, including progression to bachelor’s degrees or professional training such as mental health nursing.
