UCDon award celebrates Doncaster’s community champions and young learners

Posted: 19 November 2025

As University Campus Doncaster (UCDon) celebrated the achievements of this year’s graduates, the institution also took a moment to honour local organisations making a real difference in the Doncaster community. For the second year in a row, the University Campus Doncaster Community Awards recognised those whose work is inspiring ambition, creating opportunities, and enriching lives, demonstrating the transformative power of education and community engagement across the borough.

One of this year’s standout awards was presented to Doncaster Children’s University, an educational programme that rewards children and young people aged 5 to 14 for engaging in extra-curricular activities that spark curiosity, creativity, and a lifelong love of learning.

Through initiatives such as the ‘Passport to Learning’, children record hours spent at Children’s University Learning Destinations and work towards national certificates recognising up to 1,000 hours of learning. The first milestone, the Bronze Certificate, is awarded at 30 hours. Graduation ceremonies celebrate these achievements with children wearing cap and gown and receiving certificates in front of family, friends, and supporters, making each milestone a moment of pride and encouragement.

The programme is driven by dedicated staff and volunteers, who guide and inspire children along their learning journeys. Through school and community initiatives, workshops, and annual events, the programme encourages children to learn through activities they enjoy, broadening horizons, building confidence, and fostering ambition.

The award was accepted by Rachael Benstead, Doncaster and North Lincolnshire Children’s University Co-ordinator, who highlighted its significance: “This award means so much to us because it recognises the heart of what Doncaster Children’s University does, inspiring young people to explore, learn, and grow beyond the classroom. It’s a celebration of the children’s achievements, the dedication of our volunteers, and the support of schools and families who make this possible.”

Rachael also paid tribute to outgoing Project Leader Heather Coultard: “This award belongs to Heather, whose passion and commitment over the past four years have shaped the success of Doncaster Children’s University and inspired countless young minds across the borough.”
